Hypotheses and Analyses Undertaken

In this study, hypotheses were formulated, based on McLanahan and Sandefur’s theory that mobility is the primary factor exerting a downward pressure on the academic achievement of children from reconstituted families. It was therefore hypothesized that children whose custodial parent moved during the NELS 1988-1992 data set period would fare less well academically than those children whose custodial parent did not move during the same period. The hypothesis was used to test both: (1) the effect of custodial parent mobility on the academic achievement of children of divorce from reconstituted fam-ilies; and (2) the effect of custodial parent mobility on the academic achievement of all children from reconstituted families (including children from both reconstituted widowed and reconstituted divorced families). McLanahan and Sandefur’s actual analysis consisted of a group of children from both reconstituted widowed and reconstituted divorced families. Children from reconstituted divorced families are generally examined more than children from reconstituted widowed families. Therefore, for the purposes of this study, children of divorce from reconstituted families were also examined separately from widowed reconstituted families.

For this particular analysis, the number of subjects that were in each category was as follows: students whose custodial parent remained single after the divorce for the entire length of the study (N = 457); those students whose parents had remarried following a divorce during the course of the study (N = 155); students whose custodial parent had remained single either following widowhood or divorce (N = 520); and those students whose custodial parent had remarried either after widowhood or divorce (N = 181). The first set of analyses compared the academic achievement of the first two groups and the second set of analyses compared the academic achievement of the latter two groups.
